WOVEN
Summer Workshop
18 - 22 June
Hinn Studio x Casă Satiō
Bamboo Weaving Techniques and Reflexions Combined
About the intelligence of the material. Creating patterns, forming volumes, punctuated by solids and voids. About the respect for the gesture embodied in each drawn motif.
About the silence that lies between the lines.
Through the Takezaiku techniques it’s possible to study the relationships between the finesse of the material and the structural force of the patterns creating tension, taking form.
Associated with natural mechanical resistance, this type of weaving can then be imagined as much on a human scale as an architecture scale, a self-supporting structure carrying lightness by the work of the line.
The practice
Takezaiku - bamboo weaving - is one of those ancient Japanese know-how whose beauty lies in the precision of the infinitesimal and the detail. Although Takezaiku can be likened to wickerwork in its interweaving of plant materials, it is distinguished by its finesse, enabling the creation of highly complex shapes and patterns, combined with an apparent fragility. Woven is the name given to this workshop, aimed at giving a 3 to 5 day insight into how this material feels in our hands, how to listen to it and transform it, from matter to utensil. This time for discovering weaving will also be a time for reflection and sharing on our considerations and interactions with our environments, with these matters that surround us and those that constitute us.
The structure
The workshop consists of two parts. The first is devoted to discovering the material itself, bamboo, and learning how to cut, split and work it to make your own strips for braiding. The second part will focus on making samples of weaving patterns (from 2 to 4, depending on the complexity of the pattern chosen), followed by the making of a utensil from a choice of three models. Depending on your wishes, availability and budget, you can come for the whole workshop, 5 days, or just for the second part, 3 days, devoted to braiding. In this case, bamboo strips will be provided to make the samples and the utensil. Materials and tools will be provided. This workshop is open to anyone, whether a novice, amateur or professional in any craft. The creations will be adapted to suit the manual skills of each participant. The sessions can be held in English and French according to the needs of the group.

Who?
Artist and craftswoman, Nina Fradet draws bridges between disciplines with organic pieces that play on traditional forms and uses through the delicate weaving of accumulated lines. For several years now, she has been building a relationship between cabinet-making and Takezaiku - Japanese bamboo basketry - with her research gradually refining to find its essence in the exercise of line and the awareness of the gestures that bring it to life. Her curiosity about the creative energy generated by encounters is now leading her to open up her research to other fields, in order to expose the fragile beauty of worked matter beyond the arts and crafts, right up to the performing arts.
After graduating in Paris from the Duperré School in Space Design and the Boulle School in Cabinetmaking, Nina trained in Takezaiku in Kyoto with bamboo weaving master Chiemi Ogura, before continuing her technical apprenticeship by working for 2 years in Iceland and Japan with craftspeople and designers in various fields.
“Experience. Experience of time, space, of what surrounds us but also of what is inside of us. Experience of our gestures, where they guide us and where we lead them.
Which trace is being created by ones passage ? The dust that lifts from the ground and moves to exist elsewhere. The imprint of a hand tells the story of a time that flows. The inert remains where the bodies dissolves.”
The location
